A current career highlight, Russell recently performed a full set-list at the world-renowned Dauphin, Manitoba CountryFest, an honor not many musicians get to share. This diverse country/folk/rock musician has been keeping busy reaching out to his fans by playing a multitude of live shows, which include venues such as Park Theater, the Lyric Stage Assiniboine Park, Fabulous 50’s Car show, and many others.
Looking forward into 2017, Russell Lee and his skilled band are looking to widen their audience even more by playing many more shows in even further destinations.
It is not uncommon to hear fans of Russell Lee’s music mention the amount of heart and soul that can be heard in every song that he writes and plays, and when it comes to great music, that is exactly what is needed to create music worth listening to.
Thanks for coming on to do this interview with us, lets get to it!
Who are the members of your band?
Russell Lee: The members are as follows….
Russell Lee ( Singer, Guitarist, Harmonica)
Tom Koroluk ( Keyboard, back up vocals)
Curtis Chrusch (Bass, back up vocals)
Vito Destefano (Guitarist)
Brett Koroluk (Drummer)
Can you tell us a bit about you background in music?
Russell Lee: I have always sung but got in a band in my late 20’s. When I was growing up, my best friend had a guitar and showed me a few chords, I was immediately interested and through the years learned to play
How would you describe your sound to someone that has not heard your music?
Russell Lee: Our music has a bit of range, so I usually say that it is country/rock with a hint of folk.
What about that style called to you?
Russell Lee: I grew up listening to Neil Young, Three Dog Night, Harry Chapin, Blue Rodeo, James Taylor, Bod Seger, Eagles and have always liked that kind of music, so it was a natural fit for me.
Your album “What Do I Do” has a new music video called “Picture”, what was it like making that particular video, and why did you choose that song to become a video?
Russell Lee: Making this video was a lot of fun! It was interesting to try to convey the message of the song through the video medium. John Kristalovich helped me out a lot, as well as Damon Surzyshyn, with the overall story line for the video. I chose this song because I believe it has a nice message, and that we could convey this on the screen. We are quite happy with how the video turned out.
What do you enjoy more, recording in the studio or playing live?
Russell Lee: They both have their merits really. In the studio you get to experiment and fine tune a song. Playing live you get to interact with the crowd and feel the energy given back, which can be very exciting.
Any career highlights at this point?
Russell Lee: We played at the massive Dauphin Countryfest last year! Which is a fantastic venue with over 40,000 people showing up for four days of great music and celebrations. Actually, we were recently asked to play their again this year, and the band is looking forward to it! The other highlight was when I was living in the East Coast and I had a song from my first CD “In the Night” called “I Often Wonder” played on the radio foe quite a while.
Do you hope to tour in the future?
Russell Lee: We have been having some discussions regarding touring, and currently we are Just sorting out the details.
What are your sources of inspiration?
Russell Lee: I think just the fact that I get to play my original music alongside all the incredible musicians in the band is what keeps me going. Sometimes it can feel very surreal. The other motivation is that when our fans tell us that they love the music, it is very humbling to have people telling you that, and it really helps to keep up the energy and moral to perform (so a huge “Thank You” to all of our fans!)
What does your song writing process look like?
Russell Lee: Usually, I just bring out my acoustic guitar and just fool around with some chords, note progressions and look over my ever-growing list of song ideas. Sometimes a song/verse/chorus comes out, sometimes it does not…
How long have you been playing guitar, and do you play any other instruments?
Russell Lee: I have been playing for about 20 years, and I also dabble with the harmonica.
How have you found navigating the social media waters like Facebook, SoundCloud and Instagram?
Russell Lee: This can be challenging to say the least. There are a lot of choices for people to listen to whatever music they want, however they want. It has been quite the learning experience, but a necessary one in these times.

Russell Lee: The band truly appreciates the support that we have received, and want to thank our fans for their continued support in our music. We hope that we can make a positive influence in their day when they listen to our music. Without them, there is no reason to perform.
